What Are They?

Usually occurring on the uterus, a fibroids tumor is usually not noticeable. Most of them remain small and will not cause you to have any symptoms. Be aware that estrogen can cause these fibroids to grow. When they do, you can encounter some symptoms, though most won’t interfere with your daily life.

My Symptom

I was shocked when my doctor told me that I could have a fibroids tumor. I had mentioned that my cycles had become heavy forcing me to change my pads a lot more frequently. When I admitted to having to change them almost every hour he suggested that I make an appointment to come back in for an ultrasound because it sounded like I could have a fibroid tumor. When I still sat there looking shocked he assured me that about 25% of women get fibroids and there were treatment options that wouldn’t involve anything drastic.

I had heard about fibroids, my best friend had to have surgery for hers, and I didn’t think I was ready to face that possibility. When I said as much to my doctor he told me not to panic and to come back in the next day for an ultrasound. Evidently, I still looked panicked because he bumped someone else to squeeze me in. When I finally had the ultrasound done I was pleasantly surprised that my tumor wouldn’t involve surgery, but I did need to treat it now to prevent it from getting worse. That was something I could live with and I was glad I didn’t wait longer to say something about my periods. I would have been devastated if a hysterectomy were my only option.
