What is a skin allergy? A skin allergy is a reaction caused by a substance that comes in contact with the skin, thus a skin allergy. Some types of contact skin allergies are dermatitis, eczema and hives. Contact dermatitis develops when the skin comes in contact with something that a person is allergic to. A reaction to skin allergies may cause a redness or even swelling, stinging, burning or blisters and yes, itching.

Skin Allergies are one of the most prevalent causes of skin conditions. Generally, they are caused by an immune system which becomes hypersensitive after exposure to certain substances which it recognizes as harmful. As a result of this exposure, the body’s immune system releases huge amounts of antibodies to combat these “supposedly” harmful substances. The release of these immune cells may then cause an adverse reaction in other cells within the body.

The major symptom of skin allergy are hives, rashes, swelling, itching which may includes one or more physical signs like dry skin and it results in cracking of the skin. The hands, face, arms and neck are the common areas affected by skin allergies as are exposed usually every day.

Hives are red bumps or welts that form on the top layer of skin. Usually they will appear in a small area first, but they can then spread. You will find that the hives can appear on the face, arms, neck, or all over the body. The nature of hives is to be itchy. This means that food allergies cause itching skin in humans. Often the skin may appear itchy before the actual hives or reddened patches of skin will appear.

Common symptoms of allergies include redness and itchiness of the eyes, wheezing or other breathing problems, skin rashes or hives. Some people with severe allergies might even experience anaphylaxis or death in extreme exposure situations. There are many common allergies from which many people suffer. Animal dander (particularly from cats), pollen, dust mites and certain medications can all be causes of allergies. Some individuals are also allergic to certain foods or even whole food groups.

Something to keep in mind with the skin reaction as a result of food allergies is that irritating the area or becoming stressed over the issue can cause the skin reaction to be more pronounced. In other words if you become stressed you can actually psychologically induce hives. It is a reaction of too much chemical in your body as a result of stress. This means that for those with a food allergy they can cause the hives to become worse than they would normally be.

Eczema the most common skin problem is triggered by allergies. Similarly hives are caused by allergies. It is important to learn about allergies so that we can care for our skin. Most of us have different ideas about allergy. Some of us do not believe in allergy while some of us think that they suffer from allergy with every substance. Most of us are allergic to something. Most of these allergies are harmless but some like eczema can cause lot of distress and skin problems.

Got bad breath and allergies at the same time? There’s nothing new with that. Bad breath and allergies are closely related in a way that the other is caused or triggered by the other. Yes, people who are suffering from allergies may tend to develop bad breath.

Let’s find out how bad breath and allergies are related.

Bad breath is in the first placed caused by the buildup of bacteria in the mouth. This too is caused by a number of factors, and one of the most common is dryness of the mouth.

According to some studies, a dry mouth serves as a perfect hub for the odor-causing bacteria. It is in this condition actually where bacteria causing bad breath thrive and grow in numbers. The bacteria typically settle on the side, back and top of the tongue, and the more their number is, the more intense the bad breath. Well, the connection between bad breath and allergies emerge as allergies can cause mouth dryness. The idea behind this is that people who are suffering from allergies may tend to intake medications that may temporarily leave a disgusting odor into the mouth. Most of the medications prescribed for allergies may also trigger dryness of the mouth, then creating a perfect environment for bacteria to thrive and proliferate. If this happens, bad breath no doubt occurs.

Several experts have further noted that bad breath and allergies in closely linked in a way that when a patient takes an anti-allergy medicine, chances are the medication may alter the saliva production. The less saliva you have, the dryer your mouth is. It is interesting to note and understand that our saliva typically contains oxygen which in turn keeps our mouth fresh and clean. Now, the production of saliva is altered due to certain anti-allergy medications, the more the oral bacteria develop. The bacteria are anaerobic, meaning they can’t thrive and produce volatile sulfur compounds that cause bad breath in the presence of oxygen. So when you have less saliva in your mouth, the lesser the oxygen is present, the creating an environment perfect for the odor-causing bacteria to buildup.

Another idea that may explain the connection between bad breath and allergies is the idea on post nasal drip. Post nasal drip is a said to be the formation of mucus into the back portion of the person’s tongue. This happens when an area in the person’s soft palate is opened and this is so common with people who have allergies. The mucus is actually the portions where the bacteria live, and when the mucus is discharge it creates a foul smell, and even a foul taste. Worse, the oral bacteria will feed upon the discharge, creating their own stinky waste products. This condition which is usually common among allergy patients is what adds problem to bad breath.

So that’s basically how bad breath and allergies are closely related. If you want to eliminate bad breath, the start eliminating allergies.

Writing this from Dallas, Texas one of the ragweed hotspots
of the nation, I’m particularly aware of “allergies” and
the havoc they can cause. Here are some tips for handling
allergies:

1. Ragweed pollen is probably the largest single seasonal
allergen in North America.

It is estimated that a square mile of ragweed plants would
release 16 tons of pollen in one season. Even skin contact
with ragweed can cause
dermatitis.

2. If you know before airborne allergies get worse in
your town, you can prepare.

At this site http://www.pollen.com/Pollen.com.asp you can
sign up to be alerted in the morning of conditions likely
to exceed a trigger point, the point where most allergy
sufferers will start to experience symptoms.

3. More than 50 million Americans suffer from Allergies.

4. An allergy is…

… “a heightened sensitivity to a foreign substance
(called an allergen) which causes the body’s defense system
(the immune system) to overreact when defending itself.
Normally, the immune system would only react if a harmful
substance, such as a bacteria, attacks the body. For people
with allergies, their own immune system is working too hard,
and it reacts even when relatively harmless substances such
as pollen are present. The severity of an allergic reaction
can vary from mild discomfort to life threatening
situations.” [Source: http://www.pollen.com]

5. Probably 25% of your website visitors suffer from
allergies.

Here – http://www.pollen.com/Pollen.com.asp – you can get
the html to put a pollen alert box on your website –
either a zip code entry box or for any town in the U.S.

6. The most extreme allergic reaction is called
“anaphylactic shock.”

Immediately after contact the individual will suffer
difficulty breathing, itchiness, welling of the lips and
throat, and drop in blood pressure, and finally collapse.
If you’ve ever suffered anaphylactic shock, you should
carry injectable adrenaline from your doctor and keep
some at home as well. Have the 911 number handy, and
seek medical attention immediately.

7. Subsequent contact with a particular allergen can
be much worse than the first time, for instance if
you’ve been stung by a bee.

That’s why people sometimes say, “And then all of a
sudden …” I’ve heard people mention this about combining beer and shell fish one day, and ending up in the ER.

8. Coming into contact with products containing
normally innocent foodstuffs such as peanuts can actually
kill susceptible people. One way to determine what
you’re allergic to is to see your personal physician
and get an allergy test.

9. Allergic conditions include: (1) Hay fever and
allergic asthma. Pollen from grasses, ragweed and trees, mold
wne dust can all cause respiratory and nasal problems. (2)
Eczema. A special form of skin reaction. Cement dust is
particularly likely to cause this. (3) Urticaria (itchy
hives). Most of us get this from nettles. You can also get
this from strawberries, seafood, cheese; it depends.

10. Once the allergy is established, you must remove the
cause or avoid it. Here are some tips:

a. Wear hypoallergenic gloves;

b. Use a filter in the vacuum cleaner to remove dust mite
droppings and an air filter on your A/C which you clean
often. Also clean the ducts;

c. Remove heavy drapes and bedspreads from the bedroom

and replace with blinds and tile or wood flooring with

People develop skin allergic reactions all the time; many of these people never really know the cause of their skin allergy until the visit a doctor. There are several factors that lead to a person having skin allergic reaction. It can be caused by food, a soap that they use or even dust. All of these are causes of a person to have skin allergies.

The first cause of skin allergies is food. How exactly do you know if a food is causing the skin reaction that you are experiencing? One simple way is through simple trial and error until you find the cause of your skin allergies. One example of this was a person that every time they ate shell fish they broke out into a skin rash. For a long time they thought this was caused by something else, until they went to the doctor and he told them what the cause of the problem was.

Skin allergic reactions are never a fun thing to live with, they can be a nuisance and sometimes even disrupt your daily life if they are severe enough. Now the skin allergies will differ from the amount of food that you ate as well as the severity of the allergy. Often times when a person eats a food that there is an allergy to they will develop hives on their skin. This is the most basic of skin allergies that a person will have when there is an allergy present. One thing that you will need to keep in mind is that skin reactions can become worse if the person is stressed over the situation and as a result will breakout even worse than they did before. So it is important that when dealing with skin allergies that you don’t aggravate the area or stress yourself that much about the reaction.

There are other things that will cause a person to experience skin reactions. If you change the brand of soap that you use then you are bound to experience skin allergies that will tend to be a little on the mild to severe side. These skin reactions can be a problem that results in the person breaking out in hives and as a result will involve you either having to get a shot or other treatment option for the skin allergies that you are experiencing.

In some cases it is possible for skin allergies to be passed on from parent to child. While this is not as common as you might think, it does happen and can be a problem for both the parent as well as the child. If you think that you are experiencing skin reactions then the best method of treatment is to simply go to your doctor and have a talk to see if you are suffering from skin reactions or not. If you are not wanting to go to the doctor then you can always try to cut out certain things that you think are the cause. If the skin allergies stop then you have found the problem.

Sinus cavities, though they are located in the head, open up in the nasal passages for free exchange of air and mucus. This is how the sinus allergy causes come into play, enter the nasal cavity and often cause sinusitis.

Sinus allergy causes can be many and varied. It can range from the pollen of flowers, dust, dirt, pollution etc. These sinus allergy cause the nasal cavity to become blocked. When the mucus cannot flow freely anymore, it becomes stuck inside the nasal cavity and that becomes a perfect breeding ground for allergies.

Pollen, a powdery substance released in the air by flowers is the most common cause for allergies. All sinus allergies causes center around the pollen and therefore spring is the worse time for sufferers. As the air is unusually dry in spring and the pollination season also starts, the pollen is carried easily by the dry breeze. This way it enters the body with the air we breathe. For those who are prone to sinus allergies the trouble begins at this stage. The body perceives of these sinus allergy causes as harmful substances and produces histamine to tackle their effects. The histamine causes itching in the eyes and a runny nose.

Some people have been seen to come down with allergies when they come in contact with animals like dogs or cats. For such individuals the sinus allergy causes lie in the micro-organisms that are present in the fur of these animals. Again it’s not that the sinus allergy causes are common for everyone, while some people fall seriously unwell when exposed to pollen or animals, others do not feel a thing. However for people who have an allergy to animal furs, the body reacts in the same way as it does with pollen and a case of sinusitis is soon in full swing.

Sinus allergy causes, whether it is pollen, animal fur, mold or dust is in most cases within ones sphere of control. Though there is not much that you can do to keep the pollen from coming in with the air, repeatedly cleaning the house often rids it of the other potential causes like mold and dust. Environmental triggers are the sinus allergy causes therefore try as much as possible to keep control on them. As long as the immediate surroundings of a person prone to sinusitis are clean, there are fewer chances of sinus allergy causes wrecking havoc on his or her system.

The answer to the riddle of why certain sinus allergy causes harm some people while leaving others unaffected lies in the hereditary make up of people. It is generally seen that people whose parents suffered from allergy of a certain type are predisposed towards them. Even unlikely sources like milk and milk products act as sinus allergy causes in some people with such hereditary make-up and can make them sick.

Once the diagnosis of what causes allergy is a person is done effectively, allergy causes can be controlled or even removed to restore normal breathing and life to the sufferers.

Food allergies are more common than many of us realize. Typically this is because a wide range of individuals don’t seek medical attention when they notice it. Instead they just avoid eating that food. The individuals who have severe reactions are usually the percentage that we hear about in studies. It is important to understand what causes food allergies, and of course the symptoms that can occur. One of the symptoms that is relatively mild compared to some is the food allergies cough. It will occur for a variety of reasons.

First of all you need to understand that the immune system is battling the food you ate. In other words it is creating an internal war that causes external symptoms. You will find that with the immune system there are certain proteins and antibodies that it doesn’t recognize. In fact if you think of food allergies like a cold you will notice that the immune system works in much the same way for both. In each case the immune system is fighting a foreign agent that it wants to remove. This means that you will have external symptoms like hives, itching skin, breathing issues, coughing, and swelling depending on the severity of the food allergy. Coughing occurs because the system is fighting the food, and causing your throat to close off. You may have a short ineffective cough or a long cough that seems to last for days after you have eaten a specific type of food.

You may also have it based on your throat closing up before a more serious problem occurs. With anaphylactic shock you will notice that a patient tends to stop breathing due to the airway being constricted. Usually the first sign of anaphylactic shock is going to be a gagging or a food allergies cough. The patient will begin to cough, and every few minutes will feel the need to cough again. As the food allergy progress the patient is going to start feeling more and more breathless until they finally collapse. As the first sign of a food allergies cough it is important to get the person to a medical facility. There are a few ways to treat the cough, epinephrine is just one of the medications that can relax the throat and reduce the potential for anaphylactic shock.

Allergy is one of the most common problems faced by people of all ages around the world. They are due to abnormal immune system reactions that may be very much harmless to most people. Allergens are the substances like certain food, dust, pollen, and medicines etc that cause allergic reactions.

Allergic to something means as saying that the particular substance is harmful to your body. To protect your body, the immune system produces IgE antibodies to that allergen which then cause certain cells in the body to release chemicals into the bloodstream like histamine. Histamine acts on the eyes, nose, throat, lungs, skin, or gastrointestinal tract and causes the symptoms of the allergic reaction. So next time you are exposed to that same allergen it will trigger this antibody response.

Allergic Reactions:

If you frequently have a runny nose that means you have allergy, sometimes it can be severe which could even lead to difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat or other parts of the body, and dizziness or loss of consciousness. This reaction is called anaphylaxis. Asthma attack most of the times, is due to allergic reaction to dust or anything. In some reactions anaphylaxis can occur minutes after you are exposed to the substance. The good thing is they can be cured if you take proper medical treatment.

Those having allergies in the family have high chances of having the same. It is often hereditary, which means it can be passed down to your children. But it is not necessary that just because your parents or your siblings have it, you would have it too.

Allergens:

There are various allergens but the most common ones include:

o	Foods: Infants have more chances of having food allergy but as they grow older it may fade away. If you get rashes, diarrhea or stuffy nose when you eat a particular food chances are that you may be allergic to that food. The most common foods that people are allergic to are milk and dairy products, peanuts, seafood and eggs.

o	Airborne particles: They are very common allergens. Many people are allergic to dust mites, animal dander and pollens which are airborne particles. They are also called environmental allergens.

o	Bites and stings by insects: When an insect bite many people are allergic to the venom. Sometimes these allergies can be severe and cause anaphylactic reaction in some people.

o	Chemicals: Some people when they use cosmetics or detergents may get allergy. This is because they may have a reaction to the chemicals used ion that product. Even pesticides and dyes can cause allergic reactions in some people.

o	Medicines: Antibiotics are the most common types of medicines causing allergy. Other medicines may include over-the-counter medications.

Avoidance:

The most important thing that you should do is avoid exposing yourself to that particular allergen you are allergic to avoid complications especially food. For example if you are allergic to seafood it is better to do without it than suffer later. Unlike other allergies which can be treated with medications or shots, there is no way to treat food allergy. Keep in mind that avoiding exposure to an allergen is good enough to control allergy and you may not even have to take medicines or treatments.

If you think that you have an allergy the first thing you should do is to see an allergist for testing. This way you would know for sure whether or not you have it.

One of the biggest problems with having pets in the home is the fact that so many people suffer an allergic reaction to them. Though when the allergy first appears it may not be obvious as to what is the cause and all possibilities need to be looked at before being certain that it is due to the pet. This can be a serious problem for the health of the person suffering from the allergy and possibly the thought of having to remove the pet from the family is one that is unbearable. The next steps would be to seek medical advice so that the real cause can be found.

If the allergy is displaying itself on the skin of the patient the then one of the many tests that are used in finding the cause is the skin test. This is usually done after a careful history of the patient has been made to find out if there is any pattern or family history of the allergy, or the likelihood of it occurring just after the pet appeared. It may sound horrifying to the sufferer of the allergy but it is very effective at finding out exactly what substance is making their body react in such a debilitating way. Of the skin allergy tests there are two types, the epidermal and the percutaneous.

Epidermal Skin Allergy Tests

The epidermis is the skin that we all see, the outer layer of our skin that gets exposed to the world and protects us from it. The first type of these is simply the Patch Test, in which suspect substances are placed against the skin and held next to it by a patch. The patch when removed about 20 minutes later will show if the epidermis has reacted to the substance and displaying any skin allergy.

Another is the Friction Test, which is useful with substances like animal hair, where it is rubbed over the forearm about 10 times to see if a reaction takes place.

Percutaneous Skin Allergy Tests

Percutaneous in this case means getting underneath the outer layer of skin and applying the substance there. This is not so bad as it sounds but requires the skin to be pricked or scratched to be able to do it effectively. The first of these tests is the Prick Test, where the substance is placed upon the skin and with something similar to a needle the skin is pricked to see if a reaction forms. There should be no bleeding; it is not a deep prick but just enough to get underneath the surface. The results of this should be seen after about 15 minutes when the substance is washed away.

Another form is the Scratch Test, where the skin is scratched, again not enough to cause any bleeding and only about 5mm long. The substance may be made into a solution to enable it to have contact with the skin, but then it is given time to see if a reaction takes place.

The final skin test here is the Intradermal Test, though this is one that can be difficult to interpret. This is where a very small sample of the substance is made into a solution and injected with a small syringe and needle. This is not the same as having an injection because it is only done just under the surface of the skin, just enough to produce a tiny bump, about 3mm on the surface. This test may take a lot longer to get the results from, in some cases over weeks but is used only in specific situations where any of the other tests above cannot work. If a reaction has taken place the area where the substance was injected will flare up.

These are the most common types of skin test used and many of the simpler epidermal ones are likely to show where the allergic is coming from. It may be the case in pet allergy that the exact cause of the allergy is found and some remedy or solution will be recommended rather than the undesired removal of the pet.

There are several causes of allergies that can cause you quite a bit of discomfort in your life. Many of the most common causes of allergies is dust, food, and mold. Many of these are not caught before a person has an allergy reaction to them. It is only after a person has had a reaction that they discover the fact that they are allergic to a particular thing in their life. One of the biggest causes of allergic reactions is food.

When a person has an allergy to food it can be a reaction that is minor and in some cases quite severe. This has the potential to be fatal if not treated properly and if the reaction is a severe one. Food reactions are the kind that you will not know about until it is too late to do anything about it. The person may feel flush during their reaction and as a result will find it difficult to breath as well. A person may have to seek medical attention if the reaction is severe enough to require it. If you have never had a reaction to a certain food then you do maybe you need to see if there is something else that may be causing allergic reaction. One thing that has been proven is that is a person stress over the allergy then the reaction can and many time is worse than the initial reaction in the first place.

Another thing that causes allergic reactions is of course dust. This is a problem in many peoples home. Th reason that this is such a problem is because when they have an allergy to dust it makes their entire life that much more difficult as it is impossible to keep a home 100% dust fee all the time. One thing that you will need to do is to make sure that your dog is kept brushed to allow any loose hair to be removed instead of collecting around the home. Pet hair is one of the main causes of allergies in a person This is a fact that will have to be looked at when you are trying to make it a point that your home is allergy free and that there is no problem at all with dust and dander.

When it comes to allergies there is one thing that many people over look when they are considering causes, this one thing that gets over looked is called mold. Many people have allergic reactions to mold and never know what the cause of these allergic reactions to mold come from. There are several causes of allergic reactions to mold. While there are thousands of different types of mold there are only a small handful of types that can directly cause allergic reactions to mold.

These are just a few of the causes of allergies in a person. If you suspect that there is an item that is causing you an allergic reaction then you will need to talk to your doctor to see if you can determine the exact cause of an allergic reaction that you are having.
